Album Review

The winner of the 1985 Grammy for Pop Album of the Year, No Jacket Required found Phil Collins fully embracing horn-driven pop music, drum machines, and sentimental ballads over his previous darker and more dramatic solo material. The record established him as a major commercial force, and as one of the most recognizable voices of the 1980s. Although the major hits here, “Sussudio,” “One More Night,” “Who Said I Would,” and “Don’t Lose My Number” quickly came to sound dated, the album contains several standout tracks. “Long Long Way to Go,” which features a cameo by Sting, is one of Collins’ most effective ballads, while the pulsating “Take Me Home” utilizes the drama of “In the Air Tonight” on a more wistful track. “Only You Know and I Know” and “Inside Out,” meanwhile, show an effective aggressive side to the singer. It’s not a completely satisfying recording, but it is the best example of one of the most dominating and influential styles of the 1980s.

Deluxe two CD edition of the Britpop band’s 2004 debut album featuring rare and unreleased tracks, including early demos, b-sides, and their first recordings for Fierce Panda Records and their own Zoomorphic label. Hopes & Fears was the biggest-selling album of 2004 in the UK. Led by the single ‘Somewhere Only We Know,’ the album reached the #1 chart position in its debut week there and went on to sell over 5.8 million copies worldwide, garnering two Brit Awards. As a debut, Hopes & Fears stood alone in its originality. The emotional appeal of the record gave a voice to millions and the songwriting talent of keyboardist Tim Rice-Oxley was recognized with an Ivor Novello award in 2004 for Best Composer of the Year. This expanded edition showcases previously unreleased and rare material, including early demos, live recordings, b-sides and more. If U2 hadn’t already released a pair of career retrospective discs, this British trio’s second album would neatly do the trick in one. Not much of a surprise since Keane spent a good deal of time supporting Bono and company following the release their breakthrough debut, Hopes and Fears. From the melancholic “Crystal Ball” to the sinisterly beautiful “Is It Any Wonder?” (a blatant homage to “Zoo Station”), Keane have perfected their forebear’s dark stadium-rock formula on their second album, all the more miraculous considering it was once again done without guitars. If Under the Iron Sea sounds considerably edgier than its predecessor, that’s because it was recorded while the band was on the verge of splitting. But the friction has also given Keane a renewed sense of purpose, breaking the mid-tempo monotony with vibrant material such as “Nothing in My Way” and “Try Again”: soaring songs that make the band sound unsinkable. -Aidin Vaziri

All hail the 1980s? Well, the UK’s Keane have plugged in their retro synthesizers and written a handful of tunes (“Spiralling,” “The Lovers Are Losing,” “You Haven’t Told Me Anything”) that recall the pure synth-pop bliss of that era with lots of exaggerated productions. Keane keep a tighter grip on the production end, never allowing a reverb to swallow them. Their third album, 2008′s Perfect Symmetry, was recorded in Paris, London, and Berlin, with a variety of producers stopping by for input (Jon Brion, Stuart Price) on this self-produced excursion into a new Keane. This “new” Keane revel in the upbeat propulsion of “Better Than This” that allows singer Tom Chaplin to shriek in mock falsetto and generally play up the festive atmosphere where once brooding might have taken hold. And this all-keyboard band even adds some guitars in spots; they temper the mood a tad. The title track still swoons with a gravitas and a sense of personal mission: “I shake through the wreckage for signs of life.” The closing ballad, “Love is the End,” puts a gripping final nail into love’s endless cycle of hope and defeat.

Keane have been messing around with their sound ever since they received their first comparisons to Radiohead and Coldplay. Now, they’re in that elusive space where no one’s really sure where to categorize them. There’s still plenty of mood emanating from tracks such as “House Lights” and “Your Love.” And there’s still plenty of jovial pop cranking forth from “Clear Skies” and the U2-like “Back In Time.” But, most interestingly, there are dance beats calling you to the dance floor with “Stop for a Minute,” featuring Somali rapper K’naan and here with an additional remix and video, “Ishin Denshin (You’ve Got To Help Yourself)” with Tigarah and “Looking Back” also featuring K’naan. There’s still the heartfelt piano ballad of “My Shadow” for those looking for the emotional ties of old. But Keane are likely to keep checking out new ground wherever they can find it. This British trio have never let their size limit them and they aren’t about to be bound by anyone’s expectations. They have a world of music to explore.
