With Joshua Radin’s third LP, the Cleveland singer/songwriter eschews much of the restrained approach found on his former albums to create something a little more upbeat and lively. Electric guitars are bolstered by a bigger presence of a drum kit and a pedaling bass which all come together nicely to contrast Radin’s milky smooth singing inflections — this is more noticeable on the chorus with Radin’s impassioned melodies. “Here We Go” moves with seductive rhythms as a distorted synth line intertwines with vibrant guitar leads making for a tune that’s actually danceable before a more angular post-punk inspired beat ushers in the catchy and driving “We Are Only Getting Better.” The title-track downshifts with a romantic ditty that’s a little too hip to be called a ballad, especially with those ’60s-sounding guitar parts on the break, giving the song a hushed cool that would sound right at home on a mix between Jack Johnson and Neil Halstead.

Album Review

Refreshing, wide-eyed optimism best describes this debut recording from Emilia. The first track, “A Good Sign,” is an uptempo celebration of life, delivered with sincerity and an engagingly happy sing-along chorus. “Big, Big World,” the title song, is gentle and arranged as a pseudo-procession tune, as if Emilia is taking her first cautious steps toward independence and adulthood. Everything on this release, from the devotional “Daddy’s Girl” to the Janet Jackson-sounding “Twist of Fate,” is upbeat, danceable and overflowing with positive energy. Due respect is paid to the Supremes on “Maybe, Baby,” a song that’s an auditory throwback to a more innocent era. Recorded at Rodeo Records in Stockholm, Sweden and enhanced with contributions from the Stockholm Session Orchestra, Emilia’s sunny sensibility and breezy presentation shine brightly throughout this pleasant offering.

Flags is a dreamy, alternative-pop collection that showcases her agile soprano, lilting melodies, and knack for telling her stories through the lives of vibrant characters on songs like “Betty” (co-written with Switchfoot’s Jon Foreman and Ben West of Detroit indie duo The Real Efforts of Real People), “Crows and Locusts,” ” Jack Kerouac,” and “Ice on Her Lashes.” “I’ve never used as many characters or as much narrative in my songwriting as I have on this record,” Fraser says. “On my previous albums [2003's What To Do With Daylight and 2008's Albertine], I was singing completely as myself, which is why I think I got so burnt out from touring. Albertine was inspired by incredibly significant events and people and every time I’d sing I’d go back to that moment where my heart was ripped open. So singing such heavy songs nearly every night for three years took a toll. On Flags, it’s still me speaking, but it’s me speaking through the voices of different characters and their stories. It’s more survivable.” The album also features a co-written duet with Aqualung’s Matt Hales, titled “Who Are We Fooling?”.

Album Review

Brian McKnight’s self-titled debut album is a mix of quiet storm and jazz-tinged R&B lite, with a few up-tempo numbers thrown in. The album opens with the New Jack Swing lite of “Yours,” and leads into other mid-tempo, early-’90s sounding R&B. Some songs, including “Stay the Night,” even incorporate the electric guitar, an instrument which was virtually forgotten in pop music by the end of the decade. The album produced one major hit, the teary ballad “One Last Cry.” Brian McKnight, with his brand of songwriter-driven, piano-man quiet storm, was unique among 1990s male solo singers, and unexpectedly became one of the genre’s biggest (and only) stars, with each album building on the previous one’s success. For that reason, perhaps, this album is less commercial and more jazz-leaning than his later discs, especially towards the album’s second half. Other highlights include his silky cover of the Hall & Oats staple “I Can’t Go for That” (which features the album’s only rap) and the jazz nugget “Is the Feeling Gone.” A great album for a rainy winter afternoon. ~ Jose F. Soul crooner Brian Mcknight, the younger brother of Take 6′s Claude Mcknight, sings in a silky, seductive purr. He has a sweet, elastic tenor and a well-honed harmonic instinct that comes from being an accomplished keyboardist. Unfortunately, he rarely shifts gears, and remains stuck in that breathy, drawn-out crooning style for most of this album, I Remember You, the follow-up to his 1992 self-titled gold debut. It doesn’t help matters that his songwriting lacks well-defined melodic or lyric hooks; too often the songs merely drift through pretty but amorphous chord changes. As a result, his performances quickly evaporate from the memory without leaving much impression. Like his biggest hero, Stevie Wonder, Mcknight wrote, arranged, produced, performed, and sang almost everything by himself on this recording, and his arrangements are full of clever Wonderisms-layered synthesizers, electric-piano motifs, and high-tenor embellishments. Mcknight always sings as if he’s in the throes of a passionate swoon and never as if he’s merely having a normal conversation; thus we never get to hear the transition from one to the other. And just as women are justly suspicious of men who are always in the seduction mode, so are album listeners. -Geoffrey Himes

Album Review

On his third album, Anytime, Brian McKnight continues with the mellow, romantic urban R&B that has become his trademark, but there’s a new twist. Most of the album consists of songs he has written and produced, but “You Should Be Mine,” the first single pulled from Anytime, is produced by Puff Daddy and features a rap by Mase. On paper, the pairing seems a little odd, but it works surprisingly well, as does “Hold Me,” which was co-written by Mary J. Blige and features Trackmasterz. McKnight hasn’t exhausted its possibilities yet — Anytime is as strong as its predecessor — but “You Should Be Mine” and “Hold Me” suggest that he may be better off pursuing a new, hip-hop-influenced direction.
