The Rolling Stones – Hyde Park Live [iTunes Plus AAC M4A] (2013)

Artist: The Rolling Stones

Album: Hyde Park Live (Mastered for iTunes)

Quality: iTunes Plus AAC M4A

Genre: Rock

℗ 2013 Promotone B.V.

Store Date: Jul 22, 2013

Description: A little more than a week after the Rolling Stones wrapped up a pair of weekend concerts at Hyde Park, an album documenting the events is now available on iTunes.

‘Hyde Park Live’ gathers 19 songs that were performed on July 6 and 13 at the London venue. The set spans everything from early classics like ‘(I Can’t Get No) Satisfaction’ to the recent ‘Doom and Gloom.’ The album’s full track list is below.

The two shows marked, almost to the day, the 44th anniversary of the band’s legendary gig at Hyde Park in 1969. That historical ’60s concert was their first with Mick Taylor as part of the lineup. Brian Jones, who was no longer in the group, had died only two days before.

The Stones’ return to Hyde Park was a nostalgic one. The band even redecorated the set to resemble the original tree-lined stage from 1969. The two recent shows are among the last the band is performing on its 50 and Counting tour, which featured tons of guest stars throughout its recent North American leg.

Track List:

1 Start Me Up (Live 2013)

2 It’s Only Rock ‘N’ Roll (But I Like It) [Live 2013]

3 Tumbling Dice (Live 2013)

4 Emotional Rescue (Live 2013)

5 Street Fighting Man (Live 2013)

6 Ruby Tuesday (Live 2013)

7 Doom and Gloom (Live 2013)

8 Paint It Black (Live 2013)

Editorial Reviews

A sumptuous body of work, Tales Of Us has been two years in the crafting and is their most narrative, cinematic and intimate recording to date. Nothing in their accomplished back catalogue has hinted at the new lyrical breadth that the band have introduced to Tales Of Us. All the songs except for one are named in the first person with a cast list of evocative character sketches, the contrary love affairs, the suspense, hallucinations, fairy tales and modern folklores documented and the traces of redemption they find in song take the poetry of Goldfrapp s delicately considered music somewhere brand new.

Album Review

On “Good Enough,” a track from his debut solo album, Spin, former Savage Garden singer Darren Hayes confesses that he sometimes dances to the music of Britney Spears and that he loves everything Steven Spielberg has ever done. These are not surprising admissions. Savage Garden sold millions of records by keeping up with the latest trends in pop and turning out a series of unabashed romantic ballads starting with “Truly Madly Deeply”; on his own, Hayes proposes to do exactly the same thing. To that end he has employed Walter Afanasieff — who previously worked with Savage Garden and has handled recordings by such mass pop acts as Mariah Carey and Celine Dion — to produce, arrange, and, as he acknowledges in his extensive thank yous, play nearly all the instruments on the album, while also co-writing five of the 12 songs. Much of Afanasieff’s playing is, in fact, programming; there are few real musical instruments to be heard on the disc. As usual, the commercially minded producer has kept up with trends in pop and his music is reminiscent of the sounds that have been at the top of the charts in the early 2000s, especially in the music of Spears, Backstreet Boys, and *NSync. Dance tracks like “Heart Attack” and “I Miss You” might as well be the work of such peers. Of course, this is not to say that Hayes and Afanasieff have forgotten Savage Garden’s bread-and-butter concern, the big ballad. “Insatiable,” the first single, is intended to have the same kind of run on the adult contemporary charts that the Savage Garden hits did, and “I Can’t Ever Get Enough of You” is waiting in the wings. Just about everything about this record is contrived and synthetic, but that won’t keep it from selling.

Album Review

As one half of Australian boy band Savage Garden, falsetto-voiced Darren Hayes became the unofficial poster boy for the sensitive new man of the ’90s, thanks to his often schmaltzy brand of adult contemporary pop, which was lapped up by a willing public in both the U.S. and Europe as well as his homeland. As accomplished as Spin, his first record since their acrimonious 2000 split was, its blend of George Michael-esque R&B and soft rock ballads didn’t exactly indicate a hugely chameleon-like solo career — which makes his reinvention on follow-up The Tension and the Spark, a highly personal self-penned 13-track set of songs evoking the swirling electronica of Madonna’s Ray of Light and the sophisticated synth pop of Pet Shop Boys, even more surprising. Sure, its electro-based dance-pop sound isn’t akin to Hayes suddenly veering into thrash metal or Celtic folk territory, but compared to the MOR leanings of his previous output, it’s an adventurous and ambitious step forward for an artist whose four-million-selling debut suggests he could quite easily have stuck to what he knew best. Largely co-written and co-produced with Robert Conley, whose band Specificus previously toured with Hayes, it’s a subtle and introspective record that tackles angst-ridden insecurity (“Unlovable”), the cult of celebrity (“Pop!ular”), and his discomfort at being idolized by fans (“Hero”). However, The Tension and the Spark is far from being a bleak and downbeat ode to self-pity. “Love and Affection” is a sizzling fusion of twisted synths, acidic basslines, and throbbing beats that recalls the experimental club sounds of Mirwais, “I Like the Way” is a slinky attempt at glam-disco that could have been lifted from any of Goldfrapp’s dancier albums, and the trip-hop-influenced “Dublin Sky” is an uplifting acoustic number that provides the perfect gap-bridger between his old and new sound. But the album is undoubtedly more intriguing when it’s at its most melancholic. Opening track “Darkness” is a brooding slice of ambient electro, full of William Orbit-style sound effects, atmospheric strings, and ethereal guitar hooks, which brilliantly sets up both the album’s sound and lyrical themes of dark and light, while “I Forgive You” throws some gothic pop and alternative country influences into the mix on a bitter tale of contempt that allows Hayes to release his inner menacing side before collapsing in a frenzy of unsettling electronic bleeps. This sudden change in direction won’t receive half the attention that Robbie’s Brit-pop or Justin’s R&B-funk makeovers did, but just as convincing and effortless, it’s one that has undeniably resulted in the album of Hayes’ career. ~ Jon O’Brien, Rovi

Artist: Darren Hayes

Quality: iTunes Plus AAC M4A

Genres: Pop, Music, Adult Contemporary, Pop/Rock, Electronic

Released: Aug 21, 2007

℗ 2007 Powdered Sugar

Album Review

Previously the forte of prog rockers, hair metallers, and hip-hop MCs, the idea of the double album has recently been embraced by the pop world, with Christina Aguilera (Back to Basics), Beyoncé (I Am…Sasha Fierce), and even Pop Idol runner-up Gareth Gates (Go Your Own Way), unable to restrict their creative flow to just one disc. Following his split with Columbia Records after ten years and 25 million sales together, former Savage Garden frontman Darren Hayes has used his new-found freedom to become the latest unlikely artist to boldly attempt the ambitious concept with his third solo album, This Delicate Thing We’ve Made. Clocking in at a near-two-hour running time, Hayes’ first release through his own Powdered Sugar label could quite easily have become an exercise in self-indulgence, but luckily, he has plenty to offer both sonically and lyrically. Written during the period of his civil partnership with his animator/music video director husband, and his subsequent public coming out announcement, the majority of its 25 tracks eschew the dark and tortured themes of predecessor The Tension & the Spark in favor of a more optimistic approach which revels in his newly discovered happiness, particularly on the likes of “Who Would Have Thought?” a brooding trip-hop-inspired co-write with Guy Chambers, which comes complete with a chiming wedding bell middle-eight; the shimmering Enya-esque choral-led “The Only One,” and the joyous new wave pop of lead single “On the Verge of Something Wonderful.” Not that Hayes has become averse to addressing more heavy-handed issues, either, as evident on the politically charged, robotic synth-funk of “Bombs Up in My Face,” the new age waltz of “Neverland,” which tackles the subject of domestic violence, and the campfire sing-along of “The Great Big Disconnect” which covers everything from weapons of mass destruction to AIDS in Africa. The shimmering electro-pop that he so convincingly pulled off on his sophomore album remains the album’s prevalent sound, the highlights of which are the Paul Van Dyk-inspired, six-minute trance-lite epic “Casey,” the Giorgio Moroder-esque bubbling synth pop of “Step Into the Light,” and the Middle Eastern-flavored “A Conversation with God.” But elsewhere, Hayes takes full advantage of the opportunity to showcase his more adventurous side, shifting from Prince-inspired falsetto funk (“Me, Myself and I”) to Scissor Sisters-style glam rock (“Lucky Town”) to melancholic country-pop (“Maybe”) to a cappella gospel (“Walk Away”), all with consummate ease. Of course, the album’s sprawling nature means that it might be a bit of a slog for anyone other than hardcore fans, while the schmaltzy tendencies of Savage Garden unfortunately rear their head on the slushy and dreary acoustic ballads “I Just Want You to Love Me,” “A Hundred Challenging Things a Boy Can Do,” and “Words.” But strip away these misguided ventures into lounge territory and you’re left with an inventive, seductive, and slightly eccentric record which only furthers Hayes’ surprising reinvention as one of pop’s most unpredictable mavericks. ~ Jon O’Brien, Rovi

Released: Nov 13, 2006

℗ 2006 Sony Music Entertainment UK Limited

Album Review

A tradition had developed whereby every November since they first broke onto the scene, Westlife, one of the most successful boy bands ever, would release a new album and it would stay on the market, selling well though December, the most profitable time of year. Indeed, they sold well enough in most years to have the number one album, an achievement they had accomplished in 2000, 2001, 2002, 2003, and 2005, only missing out in 2004 with the Allow Us to Be Frank swing album, which had probably been too similar to the Robbie Williams Swing When You’re Winning project, even for them. They had also missed out with their first album, Westlife, in their breakthrough year of 1999. Now in 2006, Westlife released their seventh album, playing it safe again with a collection of standard well-known love songs and ballads (they rarely did anything else) called The Love Album, which went on to become their fifth number one. There was a swagger and a confidence about Westlife, and also their record company, regarding the timing of their releases. Nobody was going to stand in their way. Having beaten off the Spice Girls’ comeback album in 2000 for first-week sales, they were not frightened of any other label or artist stopping them from easily achieving a number one. In 2006, the competition was easily the strongest yet with albums by Oasis, U2, and even the Beatles, all released in the same week. No problem. With a fan base as loyal as theirs, they knew they had the number one position sewn up, and so it proved to be the case, admittedly only for one week, when the group that preceded them in teenage girls hearts, Take That, took over at the top with Beautiful World, their comeback masterpiece.

There were millions of songs that could have been chosen for an album project with two criteria — they had to be love songs and ballads — and Westlife, their management, and record company should be commended for not choosing the most obvious. Sure, there were versions of “All Out of Love” (which they performed with Delta Goodrem), “Have You Ever Been in Love,” and “You’ve Lost That Loving Feeling” (a welcome change from the overused “Unchained Melody,” which almost all of the Pop Idol and X Factor wannabes chose to perform). They also included Bette Midler’s “The Rose,” Bonnie Tyler’s “Total Eclipse of the Heart,” and the Commodores’ “Easy,” all sung with not too much variation from the originals, but just enough to stamp that Westlife sound onto them. They also chose more unusual tracks: Garth Brooks’ “The Dance”; “Love Can Build a Bridge,” which had been a Comic Relief charity number one single in 1995; and Joe Cocker’s mid-’70s hit “You Are So Beautiful (To Me).” If their fans stay loyal, Westlife could probably keep this level of success up for a long time to come.

Album Review

Westlife were the band that everyone loved to hate, except those who bought enough of their albums to give them seven number ones from nine releases. One album per year from 1999 to 2007, all released in November and every one of them giving their public exactly what they wanted, and Back Home is no exception: 12 new songs, nine of which are heartfelt ballads, with only the uptempo numbers “Something Right,” “The Easy Way,” and “Pictures in My Head” to break up the melancholy.

Album Review

Westlife’s ninth album, Where We Are, follows a yearlong sabbatical that the bandmembers took after celebrating their tenth anniversary with the concert video 10 Years of Westlife — Live at Croke Park Stadium (2008). Where We Are was billed as a slight change in direction by the boy band, whose formula for chart-topping success had become overly predictable in recent years. In search of a fresh approach, they worked with a lot of American songwriters and producers, most notably Ryan Tedder of OneRepublic, who co-wrote and produced two of the album highlights, “Shadows” and “Where We Are.” They also worked extensively with the veteran American R&B hitmakers Louis Biancaniello and Sam Watters, who are credited with three songs (“How to Break a Heart,” “Leaving,” “Sound of a Broken Heart”). Another album highlight, “The Difference,” comes courtesy of Anne Preven and Scott Cutler, formerly of the Los Angeles alternative rock band Ednaswap, whose song “Torn” was an international smash hit for Natalie Imbruglia in 1997. Moreover, the album’s lead single, “What About Now,” is a cover version of a hit single by American Idol winner Daughtry that was co-written by Evanescence bandmembers Ben Moody and David Hodges. Despite all of this American input, Where We Are sounds like any other Westlife album, in part because it’s such an assembly-line effort (by one count there are 29 different songwriters and 17 different producers credited on the 13 songs). As always, the album is comprised of power ballads about love and heartbreak with soaring string arrangements and earnest vocal performances by the bandmembers. Fortunately, there are many first-rate songs here — more or less the entire first half of the album — and the production is polished to perfection. Fans content with more of the same should find plenty to enjoy on Where We Are, another in a long line of Westlife albums sure to generate one smash hit after another.

Album Review

Westlife has taken the world by storm much in the same manner as did their predecessors Boyzone and Take That. Under the tutelage of Ronan Keating (from Boyzone) and his manager, Louis Walsh, five handsome and, most importantly, talented young men were assembled and groomed to create this debut. The album itself is well-sung, but all too similar in its final output. Mostly comprised of ballads whose theme is the obvious sort (i.e., love gained, lost, and pleaded for), the hooks are infectious and several tracks are destined for recurrent radio status in the not-too-distant future. This pared-down collection of songs from their multi-platinum worldwide smash release is much more palatable than its original incarnation, which ran a lengthy 17 tracks. The gems and solid compositions are what their American label has presented. Every song is well-produced and well-placed in the set; as mentioned, each track is perfectly executed. This assemblage is a worthy complement to the listening pleasures of anyone enjoying the likes of today’s most popular boybands (e.g., Backstreet Boys, Five, N’Sync). The album overall can be characterized as sometimes bland but unforgettable, with the standouts “Flying Without Wings,” “I Don’t Wanna Fight,” and “Swear It Again.” [The German edition cuts "My Private Movie" and changes the track order, but also adds "Moments," "Change the World," "Seasons in the Sun," "Try Again," and "What I Want Is What I've Got"]
